Core Web Vitals Became a Ranking Gate in 2021
Google's 2021 Page Experience update made three specific speed metrics a direct ranking signal: Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, and — as of 2024 — Interaction to Next Paint. Pages that fail these on mobile are demoted in rankings. Pages that pass them on mobile get a small boost. On competitive queries, that boost is the difference between position 4 and position 11.
The targets are specific and non-negotiable: LCP under 2.5 seconds, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200 milliseconds. A site that misses any of the three on more than 25% of real-user sessions is flagged as "Poor" in the Chrome User Experience Report, which is the data Google actually uses to score you. The lab score in Lighthouse is not what ranks you. Real-user data is.
Most sites fail INP without knowing it. A site can score 95 in Lighthouse and still fail INP in the field because Lighthouse doesn't simulate the user clicking things, and real users click things — on slow phones, over spotty connections, on pages with too much JavaScript fighting for the main thread.

1. Duplicate Content From Parameter URLs
A product page at /shoes/running can also be reached at /shoes/running?sort=price, /shoes/running?color=red, and forty other variants. Without canonical tags, Google sees forty versions of the same page and splits ranking signals across all of them. Rankings dilute. The fix is a canonical tag pointing every variant back to the clean URL.
2. Orphaned Pages
An orphaned page has no internal links pointing to it. Google discovers it from the sitemap but treats it as low-priority because nothing on the site signals it matters. On ecommerce sites, 15–40% of product pages are orphaned after a platform migration. The fix is auditing the link graph and re-linking strategically.
3. Soft 404s
A page returns a 200 OK status but shows a "no results found" message. Google treats it as a thin page and may demote the whole section. Pagination, expired product listings, and internal search results all commonly produce soft 404s. The fix is returning proper 404 or 410 codes and noindex-ing search result pages.
4. Redirect Chains
A URL 301s to another URL that 301s to another URL that finally lands on the destination. Each hop loses a small amount of authority and wastes crawl budget. On sites that have been through multiple redesigns, chains of five or more hops are common. The fix is updating each redirect to point directly at the final destination.
5. Missing or Broken Schema
Structured data tells Google what a page is — a product, a recipe, a review, a local business. Missing it means no rich results in the SERP. Broken schema means no rich results and a warning. A site with correct Product schema can show prices, star ratings, and availability in search; a site without it shows a plain link. The visual difference alone changes click-through by double digits.
6. Mobile-Only Rendering Problems
Google indexes the mobile version of a site, not the desktop version. If JavaScript-rendered content shows on desktop but fails on mobile — or renders too slowly for the crawler to wait — that content is effectively invisible. The fix is testing with Google's Mobile-Friendly Test and URL Inspection tools and, for heavy JavaScript sites, server-side rendering.
7. Hreflang Errors on Multi-Region Sites
Sites serving multiple countries with hreflang tags frequently have broken reciprocity — the US page claims a UK alternate, but the UK page doesn't claim the US alternate back. Google ignores broken hreflang and may serve the wrong regional version, or none at all. The fix is a full hreflang audit and correction.
If you publish strong content against moderate competition and rankings don't move within 90 days, the ceiling is technical. Content quality is not the lever — something upstream is stopping Google from crediting the work. That's when a technical audit pays for itself.
